Two Sides to Every Story

Being a therapist for children often means you have the be in the "middle". This can mean the middle of two kids, two parents, the parent and the kid, the court and parents....the list goes on. It is exhausting having to mediate between parties and sometimes I just want to throw the towel in and say:

I have one client who has parents that are fantastic about talking smack about each other. I know wayyyy more about their past marital struggles than anyone should. However, for awhile, I only really had contact with Dad. I was getting his point of view only and his comments and stories made me think Mom was cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. I have recently met Mom and though she did her fair share of smack talking, she does want what is best for her child. She probably is no crazier than the rest of us!

I know I often only see one side of things, usually because that is the side I am exposed to. When working with people and in personal relationships, it is imperative to try to look at both sides of the situation (no matter how hard it can be). Have a well Wednesday!

  1. Wow I can imagine that would be so hard! It's hard to listen to both sides of the story but it's so necessary!

It has got to be hard to always be in the middle of arguments! But important!

  3. So true! My mom was just saying, "there are three sides to every story. his, hers and the truth, which is somewhere in between." It is definitely important to hear all sides!!

  4. As a teacher I always hear WAYYYY too much at parent teacher conferences. One conference somehow turned to the subject of her mucus plug. I cannot even make this up. Horrible
